Bike / Hike
For many West Sumbawa is all about the surf and this part of the Island has long been regarded as the home of two of the heaviest waves in the world Supersuck and Scar Reef.
Here at Silverdog we understand surfing is not for everyone and we really want to showcase some of the other activities available in this amazing part of the world. Check out our bike/hike page, we are sure we will have something to suit your interests and abilities.
Mountain Bike
Come and explore the multitude of stunning single and double track rides on offer near Maluk and surrounds. The combination of fantastic views and uncrowded trails, (you will be lucky to see any other rider outside your group), makes for a memorable experience, fire up your Go-Pro and let us help you explore this island paradise.
At this time Silverdog conducts day rides for groups of up to three riders, this includes your bike, guide and support vehicle where possible. Depending on the type of ride you are after day rides last between 2 and 5 hours and you will need a moderate level of fitness.
Our guide Jeffery, is a local to Sumbawa and has a great knowledge of the area, bikes and of course the trails.
If you are bringing your own bike discounts apply and group rides can include up to 5 people. We aim to keep the riders group small to ensure great service and an uncrowded ride.
Please contact us about a tailored package including, accommodation, guide and bike hire. We can tailor and price a package for you depending on your needs and the type of ride you are after.
We also offer bike hire for short rides around Maluk Bay, local rice paddies and into Maluk Town. These rides do not require a guide and are not technically difficult.
Hike
Like the mountain bike trails, hiking trails are many and varied. Take walks through local villages, out to waterfalls, cross rivers, or try a steady climb up to one of the nearby lighthouse’s and gaze across the beach at sunset.
Quite a few of these trails can be done individually, others require a guide, let us know what type of hike you are after, hard or easy we will have something to suit and you and your camera will not be disappointed.
For those wanting to hike and brush up on their photography skills, let us know. Local photographer Santos Wau can take you to some great spots and give you some tips on taking some great photos to match. Please email us if you would like to book some time with Santos. We will provide you with a choice of locations and a quote.
Walk and socialise as well? Try Hash Harriers, the international group of non competitive running/walking social clubs (drinkers with a running problem). West Sumbawa has it’s own club, Batu Hijau Hash. The Crew meet each Saturday afternoon at designated times and locations. Ask our friendly staff for details. The cost is 200, 000 rupiah for adults and 50,000 for kids, the price includes soft drinks, water and beer. Batu Hijau Hash donate to the Maluk orphanage. Hash donations help to provide clothes and linen as well as pay school fees for 40 kids, so, your dollars will make a difference to the local community and you will have a great afternoon out with some of the funniest locals and expat’s you could ever hope to meet.
Stand Up Paddle
Ok, we know we said West Sumbawa is not all about surfing, but, stand up paddle boarding rates a mention here for two reasons, one it’s fun and two, even if you have never surfed you can learn to stand up paddle at Silverdog.
To the right of Silverdog beautiful Maluk Bay offers the calm waters needed to get your head around the basics, even the kids can have a go. Stand up paddle boarding is a great way to get yourself out onto the water, check out the reef and some beautiful marine life including the gentle sea turtles who make Maluk Bay their home.
Silverdog has learners boards available for hire.
Stand up paddle boarding is great for fitness and on bigger swells small waves break into the river mouth of Maluk Bay, they are just the right size to learn on.
The usual surf breaks are available to those more experienced on the SUP although, Tropicals and Yo Yo’s are the most favoured breaks for SUP’s in this area.
Fish/Swim/Snorkel
If fishing is your thing there are plenty of options, fish from the beach, boat or try your hand spear fishing out on the reef.
We can hook you up with local spearfishing guide and can put you in touch with local fishermen, if you would like to try your luck above the waterline.
Maluk Bay is the perfect place to swim and snorkel. The Bay is a great beach for families and is the most “kid friendly” beach in the area.
Please note we do not hire out spearfishing equipment.
